Three Ideas to Customize Your Walk-in Tub/Shower Combo

Posted on: 3 February 2017

Converting your existing bathtub or shower into a walk-in tub can help make it easy for all members of your family to bathe, even if they have mobility issues. However, you may be concerned about the look and comfort level of your new shower conversion. Fortunately, there are a few additional touches you can use to make this space a beautiful and luxurious place for everyone to relax in. Here are just a few ideas you can use as you take on this bathroom remodeling project.

Built-In Seating

Instead of opting for a traditional shower chair you might pick up from a medical supplier, consider having your contractor build a shower bench into the walk-in tub/shower area. This will add a more spa-like look while providing a safe place for people to bathe independently. Consider placing the bench at the end of the tub area so that it runs the width of the space. Have your contractor add in grab bars on either end for added safety. You can have custom grab bars created in a beautiful oil-rubbed bronze or brushed chrome finish to add a handsome finishing touch to the bench.

Rainfall Shower Head

A rainfall shower head adds another spa-like quality to the walk-in tub/shower area. Look for a model that lets you control the water pressure so you can select from a light sprinkle or a deep massaging water flow. You may also want to install a handheld shower attachment for anyone in the home who must be seated to shower. Be sure to add a new faucet spout as well so you can coordinate all of the fixtures in the tub area for a cohesive look.

Mosaic Tile

Your walk-in tub doesn't have to be a plain color. Consider customizing the tub with mosaic tile on the outside, and continue the mosaic pattern up the walls surrounding the tub-shower area. This creates a focal point in the room and adds a splash of color. Choose a contrasting tile color for the inside of the tub/shower area for a beautiful finish to the space. You can also add a mosaic tile pattern in the front of the tub for a unique look.
