Wax Your Hardwood Flooring For A Great Workout

Posted on: 6 November 2014

If you are the type of person who gets bored with the same old workout day in and day out, here's a great idea: Turn waxing your unvarnished hardwood flooring into a workout for your legs and derriere. You should be waxing your floors every six months or so, but you may find yourself doing it more when you find out how much fun it can be. Here's what you need and how to get it done.

What You Need

  • Mop
  • Floor cleaner
  • Hardwood flooring wax (paste or liquid)
  • Lint-free cloth or T-shirt
  • 6 pairs of thick, clean Socks
  • Your favorite music

What You Do

1. Clean the Floor

Clean your hardwood flooring with a mop and floor cleaner. This removes any dirt or debris that can get trapped under the wax, ruining your finish. Let the floor air-dry before applying wax.

2. Apply the Wax

Whether you use wax paste or liquid is up to you; both will do the job. Follow the instructions on the tub or bottle to apply the wax to the floor. Be sure to apply the wax in thin layers so that it dries evenly. Start in one corner of the room and work your way across the entire floor. Allow the wax to dry to a cloudy haze. If you notice that you missed any spots of floor, apply wax to those areas and let it dry.

3. Turn On Your Music

If you haven't already, now is the time to turn on the music. Put on music that makes you want to move. For some people, head-banging rock-n-roll is the perfect choice, other people may prefer different tunes. No matter what you choose, it should make you want to get up and dance.

4. Buff the Floor

Put on a clean pair of socks and, in your mind, divide your floor into four-foot sections. Stand at one edge of your section, place as much weight as you can on your right foot, and slide your foot forward two feet. Shift your weight to your left foot, and slide your left foot up to meet your right foot. Continue sliding your feet in back-and-forth and side-to-side motions over the entire section of floor.

Change your socks, and slide back-and-forth over the second section of flooring. Change socks for each new section of flooring until you have buffed away all of the wax and given your floors a beautiful shine. By the time you are done, your muscles should feel as though they had a good workout. If you enjoy yourself, you can easily use this same method to wash your floors.
